Self-Responsibility
As a physician & healer, this concept continually comes to light for me in my practice. The idea of complete self-responsibility is elusive to most of us as it is not something we are taught to embrace, rather it has negative connotations and some form of punishment associated with it.
What does self-responsibility mean? Does it mean taking good care of yourself? To many it means looking after one’s own best interests – in regards to health, it’s usually eating a nutritious diet, exercising, and leading a healthy lifestyle. For some it can mean providing for a family. For all of us, looking after ourselves means ensuring our needs are met in a healthy authentic way. This phrase means different things to many people.
To me, self-responsibility doesn’t equate to “buck up and start doing better”. Rather it means to own our divinity, to own our power in the world. It means that as adults we fully acknowledge that in each moment, we are making choices that determine our experience. We choose when we wake up, when we shower, what food we eat, the house we live in, the people we share a home with, the job we work at, the neighbourhood/country we live in and what we do in our spare time. We even make choices regarding our actions – how we treat ourselves and how we treat others.
This concept is so simple and yet it’s frustrating to grasp for many of us! We don’t want to think that each moment, each thought/feeling/action we have is actually a choice that determines our current and future experiences! That’s way to scary to think about. In general, we don’t want to accept full responsibility for ourselves and our lives. It’s such a daunting task. It would mean that we are more powerful that we perceive ourselves to be.
But in fact, that’s the trick! We are all much more powerful than we realize. By accepting complete self-responsibility for our lives, we actually become empowered. It means that we can determine our destiny. It means that we can create our dream lives. It means we don’t play by the same rules anymore. It means that we don’t look outside of ourselves for betterment, for growth. Rather, we seek the power within us.
We all are blessed with different genetics, body types, and our own variety of conditioning. We all have a unique energetic signature with our bodies that corresponds to an energetic flow of well-being and health. Once we take complete responsibility for our health and overall state of being, we can begin to shift the energetic patterns that contribute to states of dis-ease. And for those of us who have already developed disease in our physical bodies, we may not be able to reverse the physical ailments but we certainly can shift the perspective and our state of being (our energy) behind the physical ailments. In this way, we heal the cause of the symptom, not the symptom.
To many this may sound like spiritual garble that has an empty meaning. But I assure you, it’s the greatest act of power we can do for ourselves – accept responsibility. In this way, we can become the masters of our universe. We can become masters of our own health and wellbeing. It is my Intent to help as many people as I can realize this dream.
